Plastic Injection Mold

Release Date: Oct 13, 2026

Plastic injection mold is the most widely used and core molding tool in the global plastic processing industry, a precision mechanical device used to mass-produce various plastic products through injection molding technology. It relies on the cooperation with injection molding machines to heat and melt solid plastic particles into molten fluid, inject the fluid into the closed mold cavity through high pressure, and obtain plastic products with fixed shape, size, and performance after cooling, shaping, and demolding. As the foundational equipment of the plastic manufacturing industry, plastic injection molds cover almost all fields related to plastic products, including daily necessities, electronic appliances, automotive parts, medical equipment, industrial accessories, and packaging products. With the widespread application of plastic materials in various industries, the market demand for plastic injection molds continues to expand, and it has become an indispensable basic industry in modern manufacturing.

The basic structure of a complete plastic injection mold is composed of multiple functional systems, mainly including mold base system, molding system, gating system, cooling system, ejection system, exhaust system, and guiding positioning system. Each system cooperates with each other to complete the whole injection molding process stably and efficiently. The mold base is the main support framework of the mold, which carries all mold components and ensures the overall structural stability of the mold. The molding system composed of cavity and core is the core part of the mold, which directly determines the shape, size, and structural characteristics of plastic products. The gating system is the transportation channel of molten plastic, responsible for delivering the molten plastic from the injection molding machine nozzle to the mold cavity to complete product filling.

The cooling system is composed of circulating water channels distributed inside the mold plate and molding parts, which controls the mold temperature and accelerates the cooling and shaping speed of plastic parts, improving production efficiency and product dimensional stability. The ejection system is composed of ejector pins, ejector plates, and hydraulic or pneumatic power devices, which automatically push the cooled and shaped plastic parts out of the mold cavity to realize automatic demolding. The exhaust system discharges the air in the cavity and the gas generated by plastic melting to avoid product surface defects. The guiding positioning system composed of guide pins and guide sleeves ensures the accurate alignment of the movable mold and fixed mold during mold opening and closing, preventing mold dislocation and product dimensional deviation. The perfect cooperation of these seven major systems ensures the stable operation of the injection mold and the consistency of mass-produced products.

Plastic injection molds can be classified into multiple types according to different classification standards. According to the number of cavities, they can be divided into single-cavity molds and multi-cavity molds. Single-cavity molds are suitable for small-batch and large-size plastic products, with simple structure and low manufacturing cost; multi-cavity molds can produce multiple products in one molding cycle, which is suitable for mass production of small and medium-sized products, with high production efficiency. According to the molding structure, they can be divided into ordinary flat molds, slider molds, lifter molds, core-pulling molds, and hot runner molds. Hot runner molds are high-efficiency upgraded molds, which abandon the traditional cold runner material waste, realize no waste molding, shorten the molding cycle, and are widely used in high-efficiency mass production of high-end products.

According to the service life and precision grade, plastic injection molds can be divided into ordinary molds, high-precision molds, and ultra-precision molds. Ordinary molds are suitable for daily necessities and low-precision industrial products, with low tolerance requirements and short service life; high-precision and ultra-precision molds are used for electronic precision parts, medical devices, and automotive high-end accessories, with strict tolerance control and long service life. In addition, according to the plastic material characteristics, they can also be divided into general plastic molds and engineering plastic molds, which are designed and manufactured targeted at the different fluidity, shrinkage, and heat resistance of general plastics (PP, PE, ABS) and engineering plastics (PC, PA, POM).

The application advantages of plastic injection molds are extremely prominent in industrial production. First, they have high production efficiency. The injection molding process realizes rapid molding through mold cycle operation, which can complete hundreds of thousands or even millions of product productions in a short time, far exceeding the efficiency of manual processing and mechanical cutting processing. Second, the product consistency is good. The mold cavity has fixed precision and structure, and the products produced in batches have exactly the same shape, size, and surface quality, realizing standardized mass production. Third, the product diversity is strong. By replacing different mold structures, products of various shapes and structures can be produced, meeting the personalized and diversified production needs of various industries. Fourth, the comprehensive production cost is low. Although the initial mold manufacturing cost is high, the unit product cost is extremely low in long-term mass production, which has significant cost advantages compared with other processing technologies.

In the current industrial development trend, plastic injection molds are constantly upgrading in technology and performance. With the integration of intelligent manufacturing, 3D printing, and digital simulation technology, the design and manufacturing cycle of injection molds is continuously shortened, and the precision and stability are further improved. Intelligent injection molds equipped with sensors can monitor mold temperature, pressure, wear, and other data in real time during operation, realize early warning of mold failure, and improve production safety and stability. At the same time, environmental protection and energy-saving molds have become a new development trend. Through optimized runner design and cooling system optimization, material waste and energy consumption are reduced, meeting the requirements of green manufacturing. As a basic manufacturing tool, plastic injection molds will always be the core support of the plastic industry, and their technological progress will continue to drive the upgrading and development of the entire downstream manufacturing industry.
